I was born in Chicago, Illinois in the winter of 1951. I grew up in a small midwestern town in Ohio called New Paris, where I stayed until high school graduation in 1969 when I moved back to Chicago to study photography. After deciding I wasn't very interested in photography I renewed my education in music and began studying classical composition at Chicago's Roosevelt University. I worked full-time in the production side of advertising and continued in that field until my family and I moved to Mobile in the spring of 1987. It was then that I decided to pursue a teaching degree at the University of South Alabama.

I have been teaching since 1989 and at Semmes Middles School since 1993.
